DNS Servers for RT-N66W

Hey all-

Just picked up a new "white knight" lol a few weeks back and a little confused about the DNS configuration. I have unchecked connect to DNS automatically setting or whatever it is in the WAN menu and listed (2) DNS servers there but when I do an ipconfig /all it shows the routers ip as the DNS?

Previously when I used a different router it would actually show the DNS ip's of the ISP or whatever you put in there under network adapter settings. I am confused why the router is using itself as the DNS gateway...or whatever?

Also wanted to mention...for as many positive reviews I read on this particular routers wifi abilities (as far as range) I am not to impressed. Not sure that I get any better coverage than my old wifi setup which was 13 years old!

Thanks....

The DHCP server provides your router's IP to the clients. The router takes care of fowarding requests to the DNS servers you configure on the WAN page.

You can change the actual IP provided to DHCP clients on the DHCP page I think (I'm not at home to validate the location), however it only allows to push one single DNS server.

The switch to the SDK6 driver killed the range on the RT-N66U. The best alternative at this time is to run the SDK5 version of my firmware - it will work fine with the RT-N66W.

Use google dns servers or opendns. I have the same problem when using ISP's dns. Do a google search to find the dns servers.

The forum member Asusnet is an Asus employee, but he refuses to respond to any post about the wireless range. Maybe if you sent him a private message and asked him what Asus is doing about the range on the RT-N66U/Rt-N66w you'll possibly get a response.

If you want to confirm that the router is actually using the DNS servers that you want it to, then use Netalyzr.

To Asusnet's defense, his actual job at Asus isn't as a community representative (like CL-Jeremy before him, CL = Customer Loyalty group) but at a different level (which isn't my place to disclose publicly, so you'll have to trust me on this one). His presence on these forum is far more limited, and has to be done on spare time, so he does not have time to read through every single thread and message unlike a full-time assigned employee. Just saying he's not refusing to respond, he probably just didn't have time to read through these posts.

If you have an actual issue that needs to be brought to his attention then I recommend indeed going through the PM route.

I'm surprised you haven't heard anything from Asus about how their progress is coming on fixing the wireless range issue on RT-N66U since you have direct communication channel with Asus.

9/26/13 was quite a long time ago.

Simply because I didn't ask. Dealing with other things these days.

RMerlin-

Thanks for the reply...I certainly understand what you are saying and am familiar with DHCP etc, I was just confused as to why the router takes care of forwarding those requests...thus it's ip is listed as the DNS server under ipconfig /all. In the past, maybe because I had an older router, when I did an ipconfig /all on a pc, etc..my actualy ISP or other (google, etc) DNS servers would display. I have added the two DNS servers that I would like the DHCP server to hand out under the DHCP page already. So even though it shows my router's ip I will assume that it is still querying those DNS servers for resolution.

Yeah, I have been reading a lot of other posts complaining about the same thing (upgrading from .374_836 to .374_979). When I was going through the setup of my router I installed the firmware update (thinking that would be a good thing...lol) and am now running the 979.

I am interested in running a different version I think....also kind of interested in running merlin firmware for the compatibility to openvpn but I don't really feel like configuring my router again...I have a bunch of port forwards and stuff for ip cams.....
