Do I need to do a reset before AND after firmware upgrade?

You only need to reset after the upgrade resetting before a firmware upgrade is not only not needed its a waist of time.

That is not a safe approach, especially when going from one major version to another. RMerlin mentioned that multiple times (he also often recommends reset to default if users have any strange issues he can't reproduce), I just couldn't find if reset before upgrading makes any sense. Answer to that was given above.

There's no point in resetting before an upgrade, as there's nothing in those settings that could prevent the firmware upgrade from successfully completing (unlike if you were going to switch to a totally different firmware, such as DD-WRT). The reset done after the firmware upgrade will ensure that you start with all the default values expected by the firmware you are running after the upgrade.
