Im trying to set up the vpn on my router but it will not connect and just times out.
I read a few sites that say the vpn function does not work.

Is this true?

Thanks,
Chris

The VPN service works fine. You must ensure however that you don't have a second router standing in front of your router - many ISPs provide modem/router combos, which will essentially firewall all access to your RT-N66U. In such case, you need to find a way to put the modem into bridged mode.

Thanks, That must be my problem.
I have a att uverse modem/router but i enabled dmz-plus on that and I now have my n66 doing all the work but vpn is still a no go.

PPTP VPN relies on the GRE protocol (protocol 47). It's possible that DMZ Plus only forwards TCP/UDP/ICMP traffic but still filters out the GRE protocol.

One potential workaround is to switch to Asuswrt-Merlin or Tomato, and use OpenVPN instead, which is fully TCP or UDP based.

OK if I switch to your firmware can I restore my setting using the restore feature or do I have to reconfigure everything?

Thanks again.

If coming from a recent enough version (354 or newer), there is no need to reconfigure anything. All your settings will be preserved.
