Hi guys FWIW I figured out what was causing the mysterious printk suppression messages in the system log.
It looked like it was DHCP logs because those lines frequently preceded the printk messages.
Even though I had turned off DHCP logging, the printk messages were still appearing. Thus I began to suspect that it was something else entirely.
I had "enable firewall" set to Off.
I tested it with "enable firewall" set to On (DoS off, no logged packets) and the printk messages have stopped!
So something about having the firewall disabled causes the printk messages...
Anyway so hopefully the router firewall doesn't interfere with any of my network services / gaming / router performance. I don't know what it actually does at the end of the day, given that everything is behind NAT...
