Encountered problem while using the restore tool

New Around Here
Hi,

I'm a complete noob here :)

Yesterday I bought this router and out of the box I was quite happy with the performance. The firmware that it came with was 1.0.1.8j.

Today I tried updating the firmware to the latest 3.0.0.4.374.239 and noticed that the wifi signal was far worse than before.

So I tried to use the restore tool and followed http://support.asus.com/FAQ/Detail....AC-F0BD-684C-091D-2648FE6C1D6D&p=11&m=RT-N56U
to install 1.0.1.8t ("j" wasn't on their site anymore).

But during the last step after clicking "Upload", it said something about not being able to find the wireless device and that the restore had failed. I checked on the router page and it was using 1.0.1.8t. I also tried to factory restore the settings.

However, the wifi performance still seems to be worse than when it had 1.0.1.8j. Currently my laptop(2.4) is only connected at 52 Mbps (router is on first floor)

I have a few questions:

1) Could the restore have screwed something up? (unfortunately I don't remember the message or have a screenshot of the error). If this is the case, will flashing another version fix it?

2) Any settings I should use to improve performance?

3) I just read the thread on 3.0.0.4.374.130 and it seems like many people are having wifi issues with this version. This is kind of a follow up to 1) but can I just flash 3.0.0.4.360 on it even though the restore had "failed"?

To provide some info on my set up:

I live in a townhouse complex with quite a few networks around me...also have the router on the first floor while clients are on the second.

Thanks.

Don't know if this is the case, but be sure that the computer that you're using to restore the firmware with is hard-wired to the router. Otherwise, you're going to have problems.

You can pretty much flash whatever firmware version that you want, as long as you are willing to use the "Firmware Restoration" utility when you run into problems. Also, be sure to press the "reset" button and hold it for about 15 seconds AFTER upgrading to return the router settings to factory defaults. Then you can re-enter your settings manually. Don't restore a settings file that you've made unless the router was running well when you made it, and you're on either the same firmware version or a very closely related firmware version. I do a lot of manual settings entry because of this, and that I like to try the newer firmware versions occasionally.
