ER5120 Airprint?

Pizza_Dude

New Around Here
Hey!

Im thinking about buying a TP-Link ER5120 router for a home installation and I am wondering whether anyone knows if it supports AirPrint/Bonjour? I have googled but can't seem to find any information that either confirms or denies it. Any of you guys have any personal experience with this?

If you check out the 6120 emulator (which is most likely identical in function to the 5120), it appears as though no setting or firewall rule is present or activated to block Bonjour, and I'd be willing to bet if there was, there should be a way to turn it off. Of course, if you simply contact TP-Link support, you can find out the answer definitively.

Just curious, do you need need triple-wan (or higher) and what is your minimum total throughput required? Because if dual-wan suffices and a certain amount of integrated firewalling is of interest, perhaps a Zyxel USG50 or 60 may be more appropriate for the task. I'd give them the edge in stability, as well. Just a thought before committing to your choice. :) Cheers.

I actually don't need multiple WAN/load-balancing at all (currently), I was going to set the ports up as LAN and connect a switch and a couple of APs to the 5120.

The USG 60 seems like a nice product, compared to the 5120 it has USB-ports, IPv6 support and higher throughput, but it is also close to twice the price. And my personal experience with Zyxel is shaky at best, although it has mostly been with consumer products.

Thanks for the advice though, I will look into it before purchasing anything. :)

On Zyxel's stuff -- their SMB gear is typically very stable; personally, I've deployed numerous 20s and 50s in the field and routinely get multi month-long uptimes (not any amazing feat, I know, but just wanted to add that for the sake of observation). The USG40 is also worth a look if multi-wan isn't a pressing need, but knowing that in-box UTM may not be a focus, then as long as you're networking skill is up to snuff, an ubiquiti edgerouter lite should be on your radar for sure. $90, multi-wan, 1 million pps routing. Also at that price point is MikroTik (again, mostly for the skilled and/or patient) -- RouterOS can be a can of worms, but it's another option for sure.

i allso use the 5120 as a "simple" router

I purchased the ER5120 as a replacement of a TL WRL1043 as i was facing severe stability issues on our Home Network with about:

1 Intel based Linux Gameserver
5 AMD based 4 or 6 Core GamerPC under Win7.64
3 to 5 Intel based Laptops under Win7.64
3 or More Intel based Laptops/Tablets under Win8.1(64)
up to 3 old Win XP Devices
5 or More Android 4.x devices
2 BADA ( Samsung Mobile ) devices
some consumer electronics like Sony BD , TV or WII-U
3 Wireless APs ( all 3 WRL1043 ) providing allso wired connections
1 D-Link DNS320 Nas 2x2GB Raid1

1 Internet Connection via TV Cable 100 Down / 10 Up
24 Port Gigabit Switch Zyxel GS1910
Cabling cat6 and cat5e ( seperated - on matching patchdevices )

On the WRL1043 we encountered massive loss of download rate when my elder son started his YouTube uploads..
Seemed we lost download rate versus upload rate in a 10:1 ratio...
Additionally the DHCP service refused connection when the small Router encountered full load condition....

Since we use the EL5120 we did not experience souch troubles any more.
In Fact the router did - till now - never hang or deny service.
I had to boot it one time as the Admin Gui refused administrative login - this was the only real feature i experienced.

I f you wonder about the cabling and APs - its an old big house (built before 1800) whith clients spread over 4 floors. I ve installed some 650 meters of cat5e cables.... some of theses get replaced by cat6, some get an additional second wire in cat6 .... one after the other.... by menas of uasage..

so have fun with this very stable device

My wife uses lots of Apple devices, iPhone, iPads, and AppleTV and we have an TP-ER6120 router which works fine with her Apple devices. Bonjour is Apples discovery protocol. It is going run inside your network if you have Apple devices. AirPrint is Apples way to print without print drivers. This will also work inside your network for printers which support this feature. My network printer is older and does not support this feature. The router is not going to affect AirPrint or Bonjour. In a basic router setup the router does not affect the local network. It only opens and shuts the door to the outside network world.
