I am currently at 3.0.0.4.386_49703 stock firmware and want to upgrade to merlin. I had tried many different merlin versions and upload them in http://router.asus.com/. But whenever I reboot the router following the instruction, it is still staying at the stock firmware.

I also tried factory restoration. But it uploading the firmware to about 50% and restarted the uploading every time. Then showing failed to restore.

Any helps?

Are you 100% sure you have downloaded the correct firmware ?

Many times we see people confusing AC68U or AX86U with AC86U.

Remove/dismount any USB devices attached before upgrade.

Yes, I had downloaded different versions for AC86U from merlin official website. All files have AC86U in file names. No USB devices connected.

Your router is RT-AC68U. Latest Asuswrt firmware for RT-AC86U is 386_48260.
Good point. Not sure why I have this version. Mu router is AC86U for sure. Hmm, let me try to reinstall the official asus firmware…
