Faulty router?

New Around Here
Hi,
I have a N66u. On speedtest.net to a local server, my 500mbps connection tops out at ~270mbps download, which shouldn't be the case imo. I'm on the latest Asus firmware, with nvram wiped after I flashed it. I should note that this issue was present on the previous Asus firmware as well. The cable is Cat 5e, the laptop I'm testing with is a 15" MBP mid 2012 version. Are there any troubleshooting steps I can attempt? Thanks :)

Some features disable HW acceleration due to incompatibility. Make sure you don't enable QoS for instance, otherwise your max performance will suffer when using such a fast Internet access. I don't remember the full list of incompatible features (I'm not at home currently to check), but it also includes a few other features.

One simple way to test:

1) Backup your settings
2) Reset to factory default, and only configure the WAN and Wireless interfaces
3) Do a speed test

After that you can reload your saved settings to recover your original configuration.

Hi,
Thanks for the troubleshooting tips :) Did what you asked, and changed the cable for good measure. No difference.

If it matters, my ISP uses VLAN tagging so I have to use the Singtel-Others ISP requirement.

Just an update to add that I fixed it. It wasn't my router's fault, rather my ISP uses MAC addresses to only allow their routers to reach full speeds. Did a MAC address spoof after a factory reset and it's fixed :)

Singapore should mention 600Mb/s w/ 2ms ping internet availability in their travel brochures! Sweet jesus you could run a pretty busy website behind that. Wow.

Haha. The fastest consumer plans are 1Gbps symmetrical, but those are far more expensive. Mine is S$99/month for 500mbps (non-symmetrical, upload is half of download), IPTV, free 1GB 75mbps LTE mobile SIM. If you take out the IPTV service, the price falls to S$79. Benefits of nationwide fibre broadband :)

Benefits of 5500 people per square kilometer. Yikes!
I'd say you deserve it. ;)

Where I live, there is 30 people per square kilometer.

That's mind-blowingly awesome!

No, more like benefits of small land area making infrastructural upgrades relatively faster and easier :) I'd say the difficulty of rolling out such an upgrade in larger countries would be exponentially higher, barring bureaucratic delays and all. Population density at 7540 per square kilometer (2013) sounds scary, but it really isn't when the housing here rises to 30-40 storeys easily. The transport system does go under quite a bit of strain during rush hours though, but tech-wise we're quite advanced. 4G service in the US isn't as fast as HSPA service here. As for 4G... ;)
