Firmware upgrade?

thewolf

New Around Here
Hi, I am currently running outdated firmware 1.0.1.8j. a while ago I did upgrade to .8n but it was a little buggy for me. Had to reset every once and a while. So I switched back to .8j and solid again. Just noticed these new 3.0 firmware and am wondering if it’s worth updating. They say, don’t fix something that’s not broken… current uptime is 130 days. And speeds are where they should be.

I am running it as a basic AP with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz and no extra features. Maybe 7-12 connected clients at a time of laptops, phones, tablets, and xbox.

so any added benefits to upgrading for my situation?

Thanks.

If you don't need any more features than you're now using, and you're happy with the speed, etc., then I'd just leave it.

Right at the moment, there's a pesky problem with the latest Asus firmware that Asus is working on, that I would wait until they fix before you upgrade in any case. It hasn't affected me, but lots of people are complaining about it. You could try Padavan's firmware which seems more reliable currently, but again, if you're happy with your AP functionality (which uses less of the router already as an AP)...

What I'm trying to say is that if you're happy with where things are right now with your AP, then why not just stay on that firmware? Things can always get worse, and 4+ months between reboots doesn't sound too bad to me.

what roger said is true, i personally is using most of the feature. faced a lot of difficulties. reboot almost everyday, sometimes need to reset the router. after a lot of that and a lot of re-flash back and forth from asuswrt and padavan, i finally get a firmware that im happy of, and all the settings that i suppose to use. i used to love the 1.x firmware, rock solid. but it lacks of hdd write/read performance which is important to me. I dont have a standalone NAS, so im counting on the media server via usb on the router.
My advice is probably the same with roger, but it wouldnt hurt to try something new because everything is reversible.
Hope these can help;
AsusWRT: 3.0.0.4-206(rock solid,less performance)
Padavan: 3.0.3.3-040(super snappy,5ghz a little unstable)
Those are two fw of my choice, but i prefer padavan's more. U can definitely check it out. =)

If trying Padavan's firmware, I would suggest going with the newest 3.0.3.3-045 or the 3.0.3.3-042 instead of the 3.0.3.3-040 (I had some issues with that one)

-042 is good for me too. but -045 have problem streaming youtube on certain videos. that is just so wierd.

My favourite firmware is 1.0.1.7f which has worked perfect.
I have tried some different 3.xx-firmware (both padavan or asus) but every time I have gone back to 1.0.1.7f. With the 3.xx-firmwares, when I download torrents the speed goes up and down like a yo-yo all the time. And the top speed isnt that good. With the 1.xx-fimrware the speed is rock solid on a high value all the time.
I dont know why this happens. I would like to upgrade to a newer firmware but not with this problems.

Hi,
In every thing where f/w is involved, if current one is meeting your need and you are happy with it, leave it alone. It's been my motto all those years playing with many different
things.
