I'm thinking about wiring part of my house with 15-20 meters of ethernet cable to sidestep troubles with wireless, but I could only lay it down in the same conduits as the power lines.

I understand this is not a recommended setup but assuming I were to use shielded/screened cable, will this work reasonably well and what level of performance can I expect?

You'll be fine, even with unshielded cable.

Some products with switching power supplies, motors, fluorescent ballasts can push noise back through the power lines. So much so that products like X10 and other power carrier devices wont work. To make sure your high voltage doesn't emit EMI/RFI that could impact ethernet, use shielded cable.

Also, an electrical inspector would have a fit with your plan.
