New Around Here
So back in 2008 I think I bought a new Netgear Wireless G wgr614v10 and I love it. I was a really good router but then my girl moved in and with all the new devices it could not handle the extra computer...cell...all that jazz...Well my buddies on xbox told me that I needed a new router and something with a gig port. So i looked around but did not wanna go spend money on the new Nighthawk my buddies where getting. I bought the Netgear Wndr3700 or I guess its the N600. Set it up as I was thrilled to see a difference. Well Xbox 360 and laptops along with the tablets seem to do fine but my brand new ASUS desktop with 8.1 seems to really hate it. I tried opening ports and nothing....its got 3 of 5 bars now for connection strength while the 614 always had 5 bars. I have no idea why my new desktop that I have a d-link 140 usb wireless stick does not like this new router....any help would be much appreciated.

thats kinda why i posted here hoping someone that knows more about ports...wan or whatever could suggest something...i dont know if that dlink 140 is a good wireless adapter to use...maybe that and the new router dont get along to well together or maybe i need to change something on my windows 8

Try another adapter, Netgear maybe. Some combinations of router and adapter chipsets do better than others.

First off, a general note on the signal drop you're noticing. You've gone from a wireless-G to wireless-N: N is faster, but generally the range is not as good as G. So that could explain some of the signal drop. Also, it the WNDR series (3700 included) has somewhat mediocre wifi range to begin with, as is noted throughout numerous reviews online.

As for the D-Link DWA-140, it appears to be a decent quality adapter. You may want to try a USB extension cable running from the computer to the DWA-140, then mounting the adapter in a position more directly in-line with the wifi broadcast. That could help to grab more of the signal. Otherwise, as Tim said, you may want to try a new adapter altogether, just to compare.

If adjusting your adapter settings or placement fixes things, then great. Still, you may never get the range and/or stability from the WNDR3700 that you got out of your older wgr614, regardless of how you're connecting to it. You probably didn't want to hear that, considering you just bought it, but if you can still return it, then you may want to look at a new router. I see your tight on budget, but one good thing is that most AC wireless routers are just overpriced and flaky at this point, so you need not even go there.

Something like a TP-Link TL-WR1043ND or D-Link DIR-655 ought to do the trick - both can be had for less than $70. If you can stretch to $120, then perhaps an ASUS RT-N66U. Keep in mind, also, that most consumer wifi routers these days don't last all that long, due to higher running temperatures and how cheaply most brands are sourcing their internal parts. Honestly, I think we're lucky to get a year+ out of this kind of stuff. So just be prepared to keep an eye on it every now and then, regardless of what you buy.

Hope those thoughts help!

If you're plugging the DWA-140 into the computer like a USB Thumb Drive, then this might be expected - try finding a USB extension cable to get it further away from the computer...

Three bucks at MonoPrice...
