Good way to hook up ext HD for movies?

Just bought this RT-N66U and love it. Was wondering what how to utilize the USB functionality. Would like to set movie downloads to an external HD there so I can play on Roku/Plex... is this possible?

Connected hard disks can be accessed either through a regular Windows share, or through DLNA.
