Help selecting the correct router

JayC

New Around Here
Ok, I've got a fairly complex network at the house, and I'm looking for a router to do some crazy stuff.... and make my life easier in the process.

First, I don't want to roll a solution... Sorry I just don't have time to mess with it at this time.

Today I have a fairly flat network setup... I have an RV082 which has 12-15 site to site VPNs setup, the RV082 has 2 Internet connections setup, and then a single /24 network which has everything on it from a XenServer Pool which runs business related services for the VPN sites, as well as my personal systems, NAS, DVR's wireless etc...

I'm starting to out grow the setup, but more importantly, everybody can see everything on my network, which is no longer acceptable... So it's time to split the network up... but here is where I begin to run into problems.

1. The RV082 is a 10/100 router, which means routing packets through the RV on the LAN is a no-go (so therefore using the add subnet feature is therefore a no-go)

2. Even though the RV082 can add larger than /24 subnets, it can only port forward to the primary /24 subnet

So, here is what I need in a router....

1. The ability to port forward to subnets other than those defined in the router.

2. 60/15 mbit throughput on the WAN side, Gigabit LAN side.

3. The ability to setup custom static routes.

Some nice to haves:

- MultiWAN
- LAG support
- VLAN / 802.1q support
- Jumbo Frames
- VPN support (no license fees) that is compatible with RV042/RV082's

Cost needs to be under $400 is at all possible (this is coming out of my own pocket)

Also, source routing solutions are not an option (I already have a L3 switch on the Internal network which doesn't support source based routing, and I don't want to buy another L3 switch).

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Draytek router solution

HI there,

I have the proper solution for you. Have you checked out Draytek vigor routers? THey offer all that you mentionned and even more features. THe pricing is between 200-360$US depending on which model you need.

I would recommand you the Vigor 3200 or Vigor 2920:

http://draytek.com/user/PdInfoDetail.php?Id=127 - Vigor 3200 - 360$US

http://draytek.com/user/PdInfoDetail.php?Id=114 - Vigor 2920 - 215$US

THe Vigor 3200 is similar to the Vigor 2920 tested on SmallNetBuilder but offers more up to 4 WAN ports, DMZ port, LAN port : http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/lanwan-reviews/31354-draytek-vigor-2920-reviewed

It handles up to 32 VPN Tunnels IPsec that are VERY easy to configure, it's a full Gigabit router LAN and WAN, multi-wan (up to 4) in load-balancing of fail over, it can forward ports to any subnets, the throughput is at least 147 Mbits) since its the same Hardware as the Vigor 2920 tested here, supports jumbo frames, VPN is compatible with major vendors and have NO additional cost (soon there will be SSL VPN free as well, next firmware update), VLAN 802.Q compatible, etc. etc. Check out the Draytek.com website.

A cool feature is that you have access to an WEB LIVE DEMO so you can check out how the configuration works using the web-GUI.

I'm working directly with Draytek HQ in Taiwan as my company in Canada: Reseaux-lution Expert is specialised in high-end networking products.

The VIgor 3200 is not available on the market yet (end of January) but I have two demo units that I bought from Draytek directly in order to test them. They work great!! Very stable, fast and does what it says. There are 2 yrs warranty on the products. I can provide you with a demo unit for a discount if your interested in the product. You can contact me at info@reseaux-lution.com or check out www.reseaux-lution.com if you have any questions!

Hope this helps you!

(Note from thiggins: I asked a Draytek rep to respond.)

Router Node License

Hi,
I just ran into a 5 node limit on a Checkpoint 500 router. I like this one since is is pretty easy to set up, small, includes WAN/LAN, VPN and does most everything I need. What gets me is now they want $360 to go to a 25 node license. Not acceptable for a home use.

I don't need all the subnets listed above, but would like to know if there is a node licensing limint on these routers?

Thx
