Solved Help with BE98 Pro + BE96U in Mesh

NYCHitman1

New Around Here
Hello all,

I recently upgraded to BE for WiFi 7 from older AC/AX connections. I acquired the BE98 Pro as the main and the BE96U (Ethernet backhaul) as the mesh node. I'm using FiOS as my ISP (Gigabit connection). Due to it being FiOS, I have to use Dual WAN to get full speeds for both DL/UL (it's stupid, I know..), however, I noticed that all devices connecting to the BE96U mesh node are not getting good speeds. I don't know why, but hoping someone more knowledgeable might be able to assist.

Appreciate the feedback in advance.

If you're using Ethernet for backhaul then I suggest you turn on Ethernet Backhaul Mode, (if you haven't already done so)? Which ports are you using/what backhaul speed between the two?

EDIT: Why/How do you need dual WAN? Are you paying for 2 service plans?

For some odd reason on FiOS, it limits speeds when you do not use Dual WAN. Regarding the mesh, yes, it is on ethernet backhaul mode. I am using the 10G ports.

10 Gb Ethernet may be a little picky on the cable quality/type. BUT I typically see issue right away when the cable is faulty/defective because the link speed is not 10 Gb...

What devices are not getting good speed on the mesh node and on what network are they connected?

How are your wireless networks setup? Do you have a separate network for each wireless band?

I have these two routers in a similar config and have learned a few things.

I somehow fixed it. Not exactly sure how. I was fiddling around with the DNS Director and configuring a guest network and one for my IoT devices. Everything is pulling down appropriate speeds now for whatever reason. 🤷‍♂️

However, to answer your questions:
  1. How are your wireless networks setup?
    1. I have one main network and two "guest" networks; one for guests and one for my IoT devices.
  2. Do you have a separate network for each wireless band?
    1. Technically, I only have separated out the 2.4GHz band to the IoT network and then 5, 6 are on the main.

I found that when I had the 5 and 6GHz bands on the same network that iOS devices on the 5Ghz network had terrible speeds. Android and Windows devices had no issues. And the IOS devices were fine when attached to other nodes. The issue was only with the 96U. So, I split my 6GHz band out separate and everyone is happy. But, I will probably play with this more as I get more 6GHz devices in the house.

Section 3.16 in the user manual.
What's interesting is the directions and screen shots in the manual do NOT match what I see on my WebGUI. It's curious if it turns on automatically when you select more than one band on a network, rather than having it as an option like older routers did.

Smart Connect Rule (tab) is under Advanced Settings -> Network Tools
