Help with setting up openvpn

dawg1

New Around Here
I have gotten the windscribe openvpn config uploaded and configured. That seems to be working when tested. I have only one device/IP that I really want to run behind the VPN however. Is there a simple way to do that? Can someone lay out the steps for me? I am using asus merlin firmware.

Also, if I can do this, would I be able to set up dynamic DNS with port forwarding on this device behind the VPN? It's a PC running 24/7 that I would like remote (internet) access to for torrent webui, webdav, etc. I have all this set up now through my router with regular ISP and want to know if putting this PC behind openvpn will mess everything up.

Thanks for any help.

Ok thanks. I'm at work now but will try it when I get home. What about the other question? I guess I could just try it but wanted to know what to expect. Would I still be able to access the device behind the VPN from outside the network?

Also, when I was testing the openvpn setup, I had to make changes to the global DNS settings. If I use selective routing, how will leaving the windscribe DNS settings in place affect the standard internet service?

dawg1, There's no way to answer all of your questions fully, with the demands on everyone's time with work and personal projects; there are so many variables involved for each question, i.e., unknown-unknowns, with each person's VPN, the settings one your router and system, that he best way would be if you start with the wiki, then search/research the forum, reading other member's many similar questions/experiences with circumstances like yours.

Almost everything you run into has already been answered in the forum, so let your search skills server you well. You VPN settings will best serve you, if all of your devices going through the VPN don't also connect to your standard ISP; that's why anyone bothers with VPN. Many of the VPN's have excellent and helpful guides that can help you. Starting your VPN journey here:

https://github.com/RMerl/asuswrt-merlin/wiki/Configuring-OpenVPN-on-Merlin's-fw

A suggestion, you may want to use a search engine such as Startpage.com, Ixquick.com or Duchduckgo.com to give you a bit more privacy while you're doing your research.
Good luck and cheers.

could you share a screen shot of your settings? I can never get it to connect with just the default from the profile import

Mick, Welcome to the forum; what settings of screen grabs (and which router) would be of assistance?

the settings for Windscribe on the VPN Client tab, the original post mentioned that they got it working and configured, and I cannot for the life of me get it to work. I even tried directly with Windscribe support and the couldn't get it to work. I have the RT-AC5300 and with stock it work, with Merlin it doesn't. From a lot of other posts I have seen for different VPN Clients on Merlin the settings on my version seem to be different so I was hoping to take a look at someone elses and see if I could figure it out from there. I am on 384.8.2. I have found a way to get it to show connected but it is only if I turn on native ipv6, this has dns leaks and the connection is unstable, I would just like to have ipv4 working

Mink, we don't have an AC5300 (may be a while). Am assuming the layout is a bit different than the AC86. Depending on which clients are routing through the client, as long as it's set to 'Exclusive' and to drop if the tunnel disconnects, the Windscribe client 'shouldn't leak. That said, it can become ticklish. IAnyone with a 5300 give Mick a hand? Hang in there.
