Help with slow and erratic AC WiFi

New Around Here
Looking for some help, I currently have an Asus RT-N66U router that works very well but I wanted to upgrade to an AC router for the additional speed. I bought an Asus AC66U router but the WIFI signal is all over the place, slower than my N router and I tried different bands etc and no difference. I connect it to my laptop and can see the signal strength and speed change constantly from 867Mbps to as low as 9Mbps. I returned it to the seller who tested it and it works fine for him, he still refunded me so that was kind of him.

I wouldn’t normally think much of it, but this is the second AC access point I have tried and both have had an issue with slow speeds and erratic WIFI signals in my setup. This has led me to think it maybe something in my setup maybe causing interference to the AC signals.

Does anyone know of anything that would kill AC WIFI signal but not affect an N signal on 5ghz or 2.4ghz?

Thanks

Chris

If you have b/g/n devices also connecting it will not help the situation. I have the rt5300 for this exact reason, all AC devices are forced to 5Ghz-2, leaving 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz-1 for the lesser/older spec devices.

Not saying this is your issue but it would be my first guess. There are various settings you can change in the Wireless Professional tab to alleviate the issue without resorting to a tri-band router though.

Oh, and the fluctuation is normal, my clients show all sorts of crazy numbers. It’s calculated on the last packet tx/rx rate and so sometimes it catches a low spot. If you are seeing predominantly 800+ that is the real connection speed.

See here, I have a couple showing random 6 Mbps
