Home NAS server options

New Around Here
Hi, I want to buy a NAS for home use, and I'm seriously confused by all the options out there. I've kinda narrowed down to Synology vs QNAP (yes, there are many threads on this subject on the forums, but I couldn't distill out what I wanted out of those), and here are my requirements:

- Must have atleast 4-5 drive bays
- Want to start with atleast 2TB, with option of going to (say) at-least 5 TB later
- Want encryption. I don't care too much if it's at file level or volume level, I can carve out a small volume for the encrypted stuff, as long as that volume can be dynamically extended in case I run out of space
- And of course, should be easy to setup, should be reliable, no-futz, backup should be easy.
- Price is not a super-high concern, but of course cheaper is always good:)

Thanks for advice & help!

Six of one, half a dozen of the other. Take a look at the live demo Web Interfaces that both Synology and QNap offer, see how they feel. The features you want are there with both of them.

As to encryption, I recommend using TrueCrypt and bypassing the integrated encryption.

It is full blooded, hard core encryption that will work on any NAS ( create a truecrypt volume on any shared drive and mount it ). TrueCrypt offers choice of algorithm, hidden volume capabilities, USB mounted keyfiles. Is overall much more flexible, versatile and more secure than any NAS integrated encryption.
