Home network setup (2 ASUS RT-AC66U routers)

JNG

New Around Here
My two ASUS routers seem to be communicating OK, but I may have bungled the setup?) One RT-AC66U router is serving as "Primary" and is connected via Cat 6 ETHERNET to another RT-AC66U serving as an Access Point upstairs.

1) Primary Router IP is 192.168.1.1 ……….. Access Point IP is 192.168.2.1
2) Neither device was assigned static LAN IP address, “Get LAN IP automatically?” is checked
3) SSID’s, passwords, and control channels are IDENTICAL for the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz frequencies on both devices
4) Both devices set on "AP Only", NOT Hybrid or WDS Only
5) "Connect to AP's in List" was NOT enabled on either device
6) MAC addresses were NOT added to the Remote AP List on the other device

Will these settings result in optimal connectivity for wired and wireless clients served by either router? Thanks in advance - sorry this is such an elementary question.

Set AP to 192.168.1.2 and turn off DHCP on it. Change DHCP range on primary router to not include 192.168.1.2 -- something like 192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.255

Thanks so much. Can you help me understand the advantage(s) of that set-up over what I now have (using the 192.168.2.1 IP address for the AP)?

No reason to use a different subnet for the two routers (one router/one ap).

Make the router IP 192.168.1.1
Make the AP (2nd router) IP 192.168.1.2

Enable DHCP on the 1st router.
Disable DHCP on the 2nd router.

Only one active DHCP server should exist on a LAN.

Enter the gateway IP of the 192.168.1.1 into the 2nd router's config gateway and dns fields.

Thanks. I have now set up the two routers as recommended by you two - thanks for the information!
