New Around Here
Long time reader, first time poster here.

I've spent much time reading and educating myself regarding the multitude of options one has available. I am currently running an old Window2003 server (courtesy of my previous job) with several HDD's (1 OS + 4 others) in JBOD as my fileserver.

I'm now looking to dive in and get a stand-alone NAS. The concern I have is that support for HDD's greater than 2 TB (new 3TB drives) seem to be few and far between. Not to mention that USB 3.0 & SATA 3.0 came out not too long ago either.

I've primarily been looking at QNAP & Synology for purchase.

While cost is not a HUGE issue, it is a concern. Therefore my question is:

Is it better to just get what I want 2TB drives and a 8 bay NAS in RAID-6 or get something that gets the job done 2TB drives and a 4 bay NAS in RAID-5 now and wait for the newer technology to make its way into hardware in the near future?

I can always gift the 4bay NAS later to family.

Just FYI right now I have about (2.5 TB of capacity for my data & backups).

I'm sure many others have gone through the same mental gymnastics as I have, and I am curious to hear suggestions / recommendations.

Thanks!

Has there been a thorough critique of QNAP vs. Synology for the 1.2GHz Atom based products that both have?
