How does AP mode work?

I am thinking of using a RT-AC68U or RT-AC3100 (when released) as an access point connected to a Linksys LRT214 VPN router.

I´ve never set up a wireless router as an AP before, so I have a few questions regarding the above setup:

1. Do the lan ports work in AP mode?
2. Does AiProtection work in AP mode?
3. Are both wireless and lan connections protected?

1. Yes, the LAN ports should work.
2. No, it cannot work without a WAN / ISP connection.
3. They are protected as much as the router in front of the AP is setup to do.

Don´t the AP have a WAN connection through the router if it´s connected to the router from the WAN port? Or must the AP be connected to the router from one of the LAN ports?

AiProtection requires the router to be in Router mode, imo. AP mode disables that feature.

When the router offers a distinctive AP mode, the WAN port is usually used to connect it to the main router.
