how to connect N56u to AC68U wirelessly

I have tried to connect my N56u to AC68R wirelessly and failed many times. Does anyone try this and it works?

Which firmware are you running on both routers? Which 'modes'?

I do this with an RT-N56U and a RT-AC68U so pretty much same.
I use padavans firmware on the RT-N56U set in AP-client mode on the 5ghz connecting to the RT-AC68U using merlins latest FW.

Works fine except I am getting occasional disconnections but these don't seem to affect day to day use.
