How to switch from merlin to tomato?

I have merlin flashed on RT-N66U, got it working for OpenVPN but I have some issues so I would like to give tomato a shot. How do I go about flashing AIO64K tomato onto merlin?
Is going through dd-wrt mini necessary in this case?
Can I just go into firmware recovery mode of the router and then upload the tomato file? In that case, can I load the .trx or does it have to be renamed to .bin?
