How To Use an Asus N56U to Connect To an N66U - Wireless Bridge?

New Around Here
I have an N66U as my main router and I also have an N56U that I want to setup as a wireless bridge to connect to my network through the N66U. I have my A/V setup in another room that includes a DirecTv HR-34 that needs to access the net through a wired connection only. I cannot connect it via a wired connection to my N66U. It's just too far and I don't want a long cable going between two rooms. I was trying to figure out how to connect the HR-34 to the N56U and then have the N56U connect to the N66U wirelessly. Is this at all possible? Thanks for your help in advance!

Hi,

Looking on the RT-N66U web administration pages (Wireless / Bridge) you can find a pretty good explanation on the wirless bridging to another router:
Wireless - Bridge
Bridge (or named WDS - Wireless Distribution System) function allows your RT-N66U to connect to an access point wirelessly. WDS may also be considered a repeater mode. But with this method, the devices connected to the access point will only be able to use half of the access point's original wireless speed.
To enable WDS to extend the wireless signal, please follow these steps:

The function only support [Open System/NONE, Open System/WEP] security authentication method.
Select [WDS Only] or [Hybrid] mode and add MAC address of APs in Remote AP List.
Ensure that this wireless router and the AP you want to connect to use the same channel.
Key in the remote AP mac in the remote AP list and open the remote AP's WDS management interface, key in the this router's MAC address:
It also makes clear the biggest disadvantage of this function: Low encryption due to the usage of WEP or no even no encryption at all.

On top of this the wireless speed will be cut in half due to the communication overhead between the two routers.

If this restrictions are OK for you: Go ahead!

With kind regards
Joe

My advice is to use a powerline adapter to substitute for the Ethernet cable. That way you don't have to use WDS.
