I don't like my RT-N66U

I purchased the N66U, and feel this product is inferior to the trusty old RT-N16 .

The N66U consistently requires a reboot, as the bandwidth is unreliable and continues to suffer.

I have updated to the current firmware and my RT-N16 continues to be more reliable with download speeds. I even flashed the N66U with Merlin software and continue to see the degradation in signal and unacceptable bandwidth.

At this time, I am sending this unit back to Amazon for a refund.

These new routers are not up to my standards, and too much time has been exhausted at seeking a resolution.

I have the N66 and only have your issue with all the newer firmware that has been released and there is a ton of it. Going back to a older version has solved all my issues and the router is stable and working well. Try a older firmware if you can still find it. I use Merlin build 3.0.0.4._372.32_beta1 at least for me any firmware higher than this one results in a unstable router and lower signal outputs. Good luck..

You mentioned in a litany of posts how your current N16 was working great for you and you didn't think there was much room for improvement and then you mentioned/suggested to others that they should get the new Netgear R7000 from Newegg @ $179 because that's where you would put your money ("on netgear"), then you post one single post saying "I got the N66U and my InSSider link score is up," with zero posts about issues with it, or firmware or setup questions, then two weeks later it's "these new routers are junk!" (PS - the N66U isn't exactly new or bleeding edge anymore, and it's also a pretty popular and well reviewed router) and initially you posted that comment about your detest of your N66 in a thread titled "AC68" (which is a really big hint that many of your issues probably aren't hardware, software, or firmware related). And now you're reiterating it here.

You have done absolutely no interactive troubleshooting or question asking in the threads regarding the N66 or any of its firmwares...

You already just told us in earlier posts your N16 is working perfect for you and you don't think an upgrade will even benefit you....

Then you recommend in earlier posts to others to get an R7000, but you yourself get an N66 and detail your frustration in this post here with few/none of the steps you've taken, just that it's crap (along with "all these new routers") and you're returning it.

Either use the forum to your benefit and the greater good of the forum/net community, or don't use it. But if you're going to just air your grievances and the fact that you're returning your router - save your scathing and bizarrely motivated, and often incongruous comments, for reviews on yelp or amazon.

As a reliability engineer with Ford, Asus rolls out products premature. If their router was a car, they would be......

Hi,
Really mind boggling. When my N66U got disconnected it has been up for 174 days. I passed it onto another person, he is satisfied with it, no issues when I asked about it.

Count the blessings. At least Asus actively develops firmware for their routers.
For me the RT-N66U works excellent, I have to admit that my ussage is pretty straightforward.
I guess it are the more odd features or combinations of features that may cause various problems.
I came from many years strict Cisco/Linksys usage, untill they decided that home usage routers do not need to be supported with a few years firmware support. All they do is to release new routers with the speed of light, full of bugs and poor firmware support.
Asus managed to create a robust router concept with open source standard firmware and a clear concept for a routers range with different specifications to suit the end user for reasonable prices.
Of course there are better routers, but for those you pay a lot more.
It is anyway the best before buying to read various tests at well known objective websites.

So buy a netgear , let me know how it's going in 8 months when they stop releasing FW to fix flaws , been there done that . Name a netgear router as old as your n-16 still getting FW updates . I forget how long ago they dropped support for my netgear 3700 v1

Hi,
WNDR3700v2 worked just fine on OpenWrt f/w with all the goodies for me. Now R7000 being on Broadcom SoC, there will be 3rd party f/w here and there you can cook to your liking. I am back to R7000 not because I wanted to but I was given one. So far it's been staying up over 2 weeks since it replaced GOOD working AC66U.
