There are no "added features" when you're using them as AiMesh nodes hence why the consensus is to use stock, especially if it has newer security patches.
Maybe Asus programmers should have done a better job before releasing their half- baked unsecure software, instead of fixing it bit by bit when somebody discovers a vulnerability.
I will have Merlin's on both the Router and Node.
With the exact same firmware , the connection will be totally painless and fantastic.
On the Router, Merlin's firmware will give me all the additional bonus features.
This specific model is known to cause fantastic issues when running Asuswrt-Merlin on all units. The older the firmware version the more fantastic the issues. In general one of the worst options for AiMesh. Recent attack on ASUS routers triggered firmware upgrades to all models including EoL. Your best Asuswrt-Merlin version was created before that. I understand you want to turn your relative into a guinea pig - go ahead.
AiMesh, by the way. It's a marketing name. Not AIMesh or AImesh, no AI involvement there. AiCash is perhaps the internal work name for this project. It doesn't make fantastic mesh, but generates fantastic cash.

I can't believe I'm reading this.
Do you run Windows? Is that secure?
Maybe you should be going with a different brand router.
You clearly came here for advice, yet you totally ignore it.
Good luck!
