IPv6 Query

my modem does not support IPv6 (no mention of it on it web gui) but as everyone knows rt-n66u does support it. my query - whether i'll be able to pull an IPv6 address if and when provided by my ISP? is it necessary for my modem to also support IPv6 standard?

If your ISP supports IPv6, its modem should also. And yes, the modem must support IPv6, at minimum properly passing its packets through.

even if the modem is in Bridge mode and the n66 is doing the dialing?

actually i have an Asus DSL-N10E modem which unfortunately does not support IPv6...can IPv6 be added through firmware update or is it a hardware dependent feature?

Depends on the bridge implementation. Again, if your ISP supports IPv6, the equipment it supplies should.

IPv6 can be added via firmware upgrade, yes.

i just contacted Asus on the issue and they only replied that - dsl-n10e does not support IPv6 and for that feature you should buy a new modem !

not done!

It might take years for most ISPs to support IPv6 (outside of tunnels), so I'd worry only when you cross that bridge.

thanks Merlin...it seems i dont need to worry about it as of now. and i hope Asus brings in the necessary firmware update for addressing this minor issue.
