Is the temperature too high for my AC87R(U)?

Hi, Is the temperature too high for my AC87R(U)?

-----environment--------------
Room temperature : 19°C-21°C
Merlin 378.56_2
Working nonstop
PPTP server on
CPU temp. stay on 99°C - 101°C.

-----situation-------------------
Recently I bought a AC87R, on the first few days it ran on about 76°C-78°C(CPU), but the temperature is rising slowly day by day. 8 days later the temperature stoped rising and stay on 99°C - 101°C.

I've tried to restore factory default setting w/o WAN connected and make it run 2 hours, same temperature.

I've tried to restore stock firmware from Merlin's, the same.

-----facts-----------------------
No crash/hang/ under this temperature.
Feel just warm when touching the top and bottom, definitely not hot.

---------------------------------
I know the cpu has designed to work under 125°C, but I still worried as nobody else reported such a high temp.
Is there any chance because of the thermal grease or the heat sink not been connected well?

Thank you.
Hak.

That could well be the case.

While the cpu chip (and ur router) works perfectly at 100c, the excessive heat will accelerate aging of other components.

Get a replacement unit if you can.

This are my Temp.

Thank you kvic.

I live in Europe and I bought this one in US. so that would be a little bit hard.

Place the router on a laptop/note book cooling unit.

I use a Cooler Master USB powered unit, that forces air through the casing and reduces temperature @40C°

Here are my temperatures. Router has an uptime of 9 days for now. I'm running it only in AP mode though.

Thank you, I'll try it out.

btw, what is your history record of the highest temp. on the earlier fw? as the same as mine or something?

Thank you.

I'll take this way after trying some other solutions without adding extra units.

max temp i see 94C in summer.

i know that. I only say that fw on new base have lower temp. Earlier i use .55 and OFW with same code base. Now i use OFW so i can say only about this fw. Not know what temp have latest FW from RMerlin.

Here are my 87U's temps.

Please note that I have:
-Enabled 2-3 OpenVPN clients with specific routing to different devices on max encryption working 24/7.
-AiProtection full on.
-Firewall on.
-MAC filter on.
-ISP speed 100mbps down/10mbps up.
-DHCP off (never used it).
-QoS off (not needed).
-2.4ghz off (doesn't affect temps when on).
-NAT acceleration off (makes a huge difference for VPN speeds)
-Rest on default.
-Room temp 23-24c.

When I had the router laying horizontally the temps were hovering around 83c for the CPU and 72c for the 5ghz. That was alarming for me and had to contact Asus support and they confess these temps shouldn't be this high and asked me to return it. And because I bought it from a foreign seller I didn't want to go through the hassle of repacking and pay a lot for returning it. And in a last try I set it vertically (around 80°) using few LEGO DUPLO pieces I borrowed  from the kids. In just 10 mins the temps dropped by 10°c ! The CPU settled between 66-70°c depending on the load. So I kept it.

Hope this info helps.
