Is there a good primer on WRT

I'm trying to get myself more to speed on routers, Linux based routers. Is there a good primer on how these things work? what the parts are? what boots up and loads first? 2nd etc?

I love Merlins build, and I love the openness of the ASUS system, but I understand so little of how all the pieces go together it makes it hard to know how to exploit the capabilities to maximum advantage.
