Is there a reason BB code can't be disabled?

So I was having a problem posting a thread and going to ask here...hopefully the problem repeats itself:

Being a tech forum, I think I would be able to post something like:

http://[ip address]:port

and have it actually read as:

http://[ip address]: port

without the extra space. But I can't seem to do so without it being changed into a stupid smiley face.

I pressed the "[ ]" Toggle BB code in the upper-right of the post when I am creating it, and it looks correct until I actually hit post.

Is there another solution? Using </> tags isn't an option, because I want to be able to have it inline and not called out on a separate line with special formatting.

Thanks that seems to work well enough for now. Don't know why the option to turn off BB codes doesn't seem to work.
