I am looking a NAS to act as a back-up for our server based user and group files. We run a Mac Xserve 10.6.8 Server with 4 TB of space for users and groups. I want to back this up to a drive in a building across campus (gigibit network), but keep the NAS hidden from any users.
One thought is to put it on a separate subnet. But then does that cause issues with backing up from our Xserve on a different subnet? Or could I keep it on the same subnet, but turn off all discovery services and use SFTP?
Thoughts on a mac program to do the work? CCC, rsync, SuperDuper, etc.?
And, thoughts on a LaCie NAS vs a Synology or QNAP?
Thanks!
