Asus RT-AX86U using the latest Merlin firmware (happens with official firmware and multiple other routers I have tested including Orbi router and our ISP router which was the least often).

Whatsapp Notifications and Email Notifications arrive late sometimes when phones are not in use.

Phone 1: Google Pixel 2 XL
Phone 2: Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G
Phone 3: OPPO Find X2 Pro

All 3 phones, same house, same group chat on whatsapp. Connected to 5Ghz WiFi.

Restarting router = notifications are received instantly, usually for a couple of days. Then they start arriving a couple of minutes late sometimes, then 10 minutes late sometimes. Restarting the router fixes the notifications issue which doesn't always happen, but does happen when phones are in idle state (while sleeping, or while the phone is on the table) and one person is texting while 1 or 2 of the others do not receive the text until a bit later. Happens with all 3 phones randomly.

All power saving features are disabled on the phone, including no restrictions on whatsapp and email apps, no battery optimisation, etc.

Have tried all different types of settings on the router, optimising for performance, optimising for stability, etc.

Want to reiterate, it does NOT always happen when the phones are idle, it happens randomly but always when phones are idle. Never while someone is actually using the phone.

Any solutions or suggestions as to what setting changes from router side can be made to prevent this? Is there a way to force WiFi connections to always remain active pinging the Android devices so that even if the device is idle, this issue does not occur?

It 100% is a WiFi issue (either via Android itself, or through the router), as using only data while phones are idle never results in this issue happening. The most stable router system we used was the one that came from our ISP, that had a booster (mesh system), it only ever affected people connected to the mesh side, and it happened once every couple of weeks. With the current AX86U it happens every couple of days, and then without a restart, would happen more frequently.

It is a known issue since Android10 and made worse in Android11.

Android no longer allows any app to stay awake despite whatever settings you choose. If you look around the net you'll find hoards of people complaining of the same issue.

This makes sense, considering these issues started around the time we all updated to Android 10.

There's no way around it at all? Is Google at least fixing this in Android 12? Because it's really pathetic that regardless of disabling all power saving options it still happens.
