looking for a new AC Router

New Around Here
ASUS (RT-AC68U) Wireless-AC1900 Dual-Band Gigabit Router

Is this reliable / stable? New phone and laptop support AC
and I wanted to take advantage. Also ISP's N router has trouble
reaching kitchen. I'd hoped the stronger signal would help.

Thanks

not looked back myself :)

phone connects at 433mb/s and the laptop around 700 with its twin card.

Its not stable with the latest Asus firmware releases there is a radom rebooting problem. BUT the 68U is very stable and works well with Merlin buids 374_39 and 374_40alpha4

Hell no.

If that's your criteria, stick to wireless N. All of us AC speed freaks are still wearing our beta tester hats for the moment.
Honestly, +1 to what this guy said. It has gotten better and better over time, but it's still not rock solid yet. If I could go back in time, I would probably just have stuck with the N66 w/ Merlin firmware. Of course, I got the AC68U... and I had issues... and then there were firmwares that fixed old problems and introduced new ones, etc. I'm sure my gotta-have-it tech geek self will probably buy the AC-87U when it's released. I'd say "wait for that one," but that one uses a completely different wireless chipset which should theoretically give higher throughput, but a new chipset = new drivers, and if history is any indication of the future, Asus will likely have crappy, bug-ridden drivers to start out.

So coming from an AC68U owner, this may seem hypocritical, but my advice would be... buy the RT-N66U. Immediately load the newest Merlin firmware on it. Don't look back. You're good to go. Then watch this space for the next couple months. If all of a sudden people are no longer reporting about random reboots, dropping throughput, etc, then upgrade. Or skip the AC68U and get the AC-87U, assuming people are happy with it.

Every new chipset has its issues, and I'm sure future products will also go through he same phase. I think it really comes down to how future proof do you want your device to be. I personally upgraded from my N56U to a AC68R and still max out my 115/5 connection with the addition of the nice hardware upgrade.

If you stick to Merlin. 39 for now, yes... I'd consider the Rt Ac 66 if you want an Ac device... Ac is not necessarily stronger than N since it uses 5ghz but might be faster esp if device supports it and multiple streams

Since the AC87 uses a chipset by Quantenna rather than Broadcom, i'd have a little more confidence. I suspect Quantenna, being a newer company, will go farther to help Asus with their drivers and such.
