Looking for feedback: renaming the Tools menu for Sysinfo

Is the TCP/IP settings section in Other Settings a relic from the old days - or do users actually feel the need to fiddle with those?
Back in the day, some VoIP services had issues with the default UDP timeout values. But that was back in the 2.4/2.6 kernel days. With all models now being on 4.x, I doubt anyone has any legitimate need to adjust these. I've considered removing them in the past, now that I no longer support any 2.6.xx platforms, it might be time to drop these.

My 2 cents:

  1. "Tools" => "Sysinfo"
  2. "Other Settings" => Administration / Removed

Thanks for your work!

It probably is; if folks should need to make any adjustments, I'm sure there is a way to do so from the command line.
I'm all in favour of making things simpler for you

Hi,

Over time, the Tools menu (which was originally largely intended to add extra tweak settings) has turned more into a section to display detailed system information, with the RAM and temperature charts among other things.

I am considering renaming Tools for Sysinfo. Any thoughts? Considering that Tools menu has been there since 2012, I am unsure of how much confusion renaming it may cause.

Ideally I should have done it at the time 3006.102.1 came out (since that's where I was looking at already doing various major changes), but considering that 3006.102.4 will be the first 3006 release to target a large number of users, that might be the last good occasion I have to make such a change.
Makes sense to me. Good idea.

In an ideal world, if I were a competent webui designer, I would have liked to do like Asus did with ROG or ExpertWifi: design a new landing page to replace the current Networkmap, with that Networkmap page still being accessible by clicking on it. I toyed with the idea in early 3006 development, but quickly dismissed it as not being realistic for me to achieve

Some good screenshots of the ExpertWiFi user interface here...

Or, people can try it for themselves:

I find this setting useful if internal network connection goes - maybe because I rebooted or unplugged a cable, and the TV running Emby times out quicker than just hang with default settings for ages. I think this was the reason I amend it, was so long ago now (in years) I can;t remember 100%.

If you take out, does it revert back to standard timing? A custom one that was set could also not be changed by GUI.

No. I just added a webui to modify settings that already existed in nvram, so if I remove the webui, the changes will still be present in nvram. Technically, anyone could change them by adjusting that nvram content.

I think you should do two things:
  1. Rename the "Tools" menu to "Sysinfo" with only one tab in it.
    In the future, it could potentially be expanded to include more tabs...
  2. Move "Other Settings" under Administration.
+1

SysInfo sounds more specific/intuitive than Tools which is a good thing!!!

Maybe ShabbsInfo also acceptable ;)

Is there any documentation of the ct timeout nvram variables used? There are more values in nvram than in the gui, that's why I'm asking. Thank you.

No. You will have to dig through the source code to see how these settings are applied. I don't remember, I wrote that code over 10 years ago and never looked at it again.
