MBWE White Lights Install Problems

Ok. I have been looking for a NAS for my home. I did some research and got the WD My book world edition 1tb version. I planned on using it for a few simple things: backing up 2 laptops (one Win 7, one Vista) and as a server for my Asus O!Play box to sling movies to my HDTV. I also plan to store all my music, photos and other data there, using an attached 500gb USB HDD for very important data backup (attached to the NAS).

Anyhow, I get the NAS and get it all plugged in to my Dlink DIR-655 and start the installation from the CD on my main laptop (Vista). I get the software installed and try to run the "Map Network Drive" software from the CD as the install instructions tell me to. When I click Map Network Drive, nothing happens but I know the computer can see it as it shows up as a device under Network.

On to the other laptop (Win 7) and the software installs fine and it maps the drives fine as well. That PC has no problem accessing the drive and it is setup on the same network as the other one.

Back to the Vista machine. I make sure it is completely updated (it is) and I get the newest version of the WD Discovery software. I try it and it finds the drive but says "xxx.xxx.x.xxx - Network Path not Found". I can login to the config and change things just fine though. I tried switching to a static IP but then the software couldnt even find the drive. I also tried manually mapping the netword drive from the my computer screen but trying the IP address or the name I used for the drive didnt work.

I would hate to have to return this as the drive works great but how do i get it to work with my vista machine? Thanks!!

I suspect that Windows Firewall or Defender is messing you up. I've chased my tail for hours on things like this only to find that Windows Firewall was not telling me about an attempted connection (like I asked it to).
But first, make sure you can ping the MBWE from the machine that you're trying to map it from. If you can, try disabling Windows firewall on the Vista machine.

Just pinged the IP with no issues and the firewall is off, has been for a while. UAC and Defender are both off.

I tried contacting WD tech support today but have yet to hear from them.

I just tried setting the IP for the NAS to static rather than DHCP like it was before. The funny thing is that the software recognizes the change in IP address but still will not map the drive. I know it sees the change because the error message changed to the IP address I used when i set it manually and back to the other for auto. This is frustrating!!

thats correct. I have no idea what to do. everything points to the fact that this drive should work yet it doesnt and WD support knows nothing.

fixed it...not the way I wanted to though. I had to reinstall windows and it works just fine...I have another problem now though, the bridge i use to get wired access to the HD box us WAY slower than my normal internet is. Dlink dir-655 router with a dap-1522 bridge. speedtests using my pc on the wired bridge show 1mb/s download and i normally get 10mb/s with my wireless connection. Thoughts?

Please clarify if you are talking bits or bytes and what the signal flow is. I don't understand what "using my pc on the wired bridge" means. What wired bridge?

talking about whatever speedtest.net uses.

I turned off all wifi on my laptop and connected directly to the bridge to test the speed.

Make sure you are using no encryption or WPA2 / AES for the link between the DIR-644 and DAP-1522.

I am using WPA2/AES encryption. Funny thing is that when I log into the bridge and click WIRELESS to change or look at the settings, it doesn't show me anything like on the emulator on dlinks website. I have tried everything i can think of.

I had a similar problem when i first got the router...things we slow and all settings were correct but it took a couple days and things wound up speeding up dramatically. Maybe the same will happen here?

I would measure throughput locally instead using a web-based measurement. Use NetMeter or LAN Speed test linked here: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/wireless/wireless-basics/30664-5-ways-to-fix-slow-80211n-speed.

If you think something is wonky with the DAP-1522 firmware, you should reflash it.
