Migrate settings from RT-AC66 to RT-AC68U(P) or other RT-AC series

Hi, I have an RT-AC66u which works great, I have spent years getting all the settings correct for my network and applications. My dad needs an inexpensive (free) router/AP to significantly increase wireless coverage over the Xfinity provided device as well as provide a 5ghz option.

I was considering getting an RT-AC68P for either myself or for him. Since I am paying for it, I would prefer to have the slightly newer (better) device, but only if I can migrate the majority of my settings.

Is it possible to migrate most/all of the settings without going through each page by hand? I'm looking mostly for the settings from the LAN/WAN/VPN and Firewall pages. I'm currently running Merlin 378.56.2

I see under administration there is the option to save and restore settings, but I don't know what happens if you use dissimilar devices.

You do not want to use the save and restore config settings between different devices and different firmware levels (of the same device).

Note that the latest official Asus firmware will limit what older and third party firmware you can later apply to your routers. I would recommend that you move to RMerlin's firmware instead of stock (Asus) firmware for now (380.59 recommended at this time). Some have had great success with RMerlin's 380.60 alpha (now in version 3), but that firmware is also based on the locked down nature of all new firmware going forward (since June 2, 2016).


With the NVRAM Save/Restore utility, even if you end up not being able to migrate to a new model, you will still have a text based (human readable) output of all your settings and a handy backup of that (at the least).

That would be useful.

I most likely would use Merlin's firmware as I have had great success with it.
