N66U and speed issues in general

New Around Here
Hi all.

I have just replace my WZR-HP-AG300H with the N66U and I have to say I am really disappointed.

I upgraded due to the 300H is only 300MB (On a good day) on wireless and I needed to get the extra 450MB out of it + all of the good reviews looked like this would be a good upgrade.

I have the following setup

BT FTTC Modem (Getting 59down / 10up)
into
N66U

On the LAN I have a ds413j NAS box (1Gbit)

On wireless I have

5GHz
Desktop - TP-Link TL-WDN4800 - Running 450Mb

2.4GHz
2 Android Phone
1 Roku
2 Sky Boxes
1 Laptop
1 LG Smart TV
1 Kindle Fire
1 Kindle paperwhite

All of the about is running a approx. 150MB to 50MB

On my desktop I run plex - the media is on the ds413j.

With the 300H - I could run full HD to the roku box over the wireless - It worked good. Would take approx 5 sec to warm up.

With the N66U - I get stuttering within 10 secs on any content to the roku now. However, I get good speed from desktop to ds413j (SMB file copying of 10MB/s with the 300H - last night I got 25MB/s)

I am asking to much of the box? I know the CPU on the 300H is slightly better. What would be the best firmware to run on the N66U to get back to where I was?. I was running stock on the 300H (a modded version of DD-WRT) or is the box just not up to it.

Also, I am find that my internet is slower to bring up pages - I use openDNS for DNS and downloading speeds on the desktop for files is good (Max approx 7.1MB in firefox) I used openDNS on the 300H as well.

I have tried so many different firmware's on the N66U I have lost track - I have DDWRT on it at the moment (Dated 11/01/2014) to try and I gave up last night and went to bed.

I am only running DDNS as a service on the N66U. No USB or printers

Can anyone point me in the right direction please. I really want to keep this router, but the slow internet and the roku box now not working, I feel I might have to go back to the 300H

I really don't want to take the box back as the speed increase on the SMB is great

Thanks all

DiGRem

Thanks. I will give that a go and post back here.

A few people have been posting about roku and the N66U not playing well together and that there might be a issue there..... I am going to keep looking in to it.

That'd be odd, cause I know for a fact that one of the Roku engineers does use (and actually test with) an Asus router.

Right. I have installed 374.38_1-em and followed the setup guide. My 2.4Ghz is on channel 1 - 6 and 11 had alot of other wireless routers on it. 5.0Ghz I picked 38 as I it did not allow me to pick Channel 161.

I have also picked a new SSID and password - I also did a hard reset on the roku box. A quick speed test this morning on the roku was giving me 11Mb - last night I was getting less then 2Mb.

I will check plex tonight and report back.

Thanks all.

Plex is still slow trying to stream HD media, however, a few people over at plex have been having issues with the roku box and plex with HD media. Looks like it's nothing to do with the router (thank god) and all will be fixed in the next plex update. It just seemed strange to happen when I replaced the router......:)

On a side note, the Merlin build of the firmware is soooooo much better then the stock firmware that I will be keeping this on the router. It seams just to fit much better with the router rather then stock.

Thanks to RMerlin's and L&LD for posting and helping.

I have two Roku 3 boxes since they came out and they both play perfect with the N66u no issues here. :D
