N66U bricked

Power went out during upgrade. Can't ping router, can't connect to any of the ethernet ports(windows says cable is disconnected), so basically when I set the static IP (192.168.1.1) it won't connect to router. Asus Firmware Restoration can't find router. Need help here.

ho;ld the reset button down 30 seconds then run the Asus cd , brought my router back to life , with latest FW

It didn't work. The problem is LAN ports are inaccessible. How can I solve this?

I am not sure about holding the reset button for thirty seconds. There are other methods I have read in this forum involving a combination of holding the reset button and power cycling at the same time but I am not sure exactly how to do that or how that is supposed to work since I have never had to do it. With the old Linksys WRT-54G routers there was a way to reset a bricked router with a special jumper wire and accessing the router circuit board but that shouldn't be necessary with these newer routers. You would think there would be a user friendly way to completely clear the router and get it in a working pre-firmware state where you can re-install the firmware on the router. They do it at the factory before any firmware is installed so there must be a way for you to do it. Unless someone here knows then you will have to ask Asus support for that special method to get your Ethernet ports working and your router back up and running with the firmware recovery CD.

Turn the power off to the router. Hold down the reset button and at the same time turn the power back on. The power light should flash on and off very slowly. Release the reset button.

Assign a static ip of 192.168.1.5 to your pc. Open the web browser and go to http://192.168.1.1/ . Click on clear nvram settings. Hit continue. Upload the firmware.

This method takes quite a few minutes. Once the firmware is done uploading go ahead and change your ip back to automatic assignment. It will take around 5 minutes for the router to finish installing the firmware. But just give it time and you should see the router reboot eventually and give your computer an ip.

Proceed to setup the router.

The power light blinks slowly without the reset button+power on procedure, like it was always in rescue mode but 192.168.1.1 is unreachable. I don't know what to do more!

Did you assign a static ip to your pc? I couldn't see the recovery page till I did that.

Yes.

You seem to be in tune with this, but I'm wondering if you could mention what static address you assigned to your PC?

Thanks.

IP: 192.168.1.10
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

Well if that didn't work, try using the Asus Utility. You can get it from the asus webpage from the router download section or off the cd that came with the router.

But with out manually assigning yourself an ip. The utility seems to locate the router on it's own with out the need of giving yourself an ip. All the other steps will be the same.

I've connected the router to my brother's Mac and is says:

"The device has a Self assigned IP address and may not be able to communicate"(translated from portuguese)

In windows, if I don't assign a static IP, doing an ipconfig /all shows an IP=169.254.210.18

Is it possible the router assigned a different IP during bad flash?

Hi,
Unless some hardware co,ponent was zapped during power failure, this router is almost impossible to brick, Calm down and step by step try again.
Haste makes waste.

Not the reset button but the WPS button

Recovery Procedure

Use the WPS button to erase NVRAM not the reset button

It goes like 30 sec with the router on 30 sec when off keep it pushed and then another 30 seconds when on.
The POWER led should blink pretty fast, when you let go of the WPS button the router should reboot with the default values stored in the CFE.

Do not use the CFE mini web server, but use the recovery utility that asus provides for you.

You can check your router by just typing '' ping 192.168.1.1 '' in a cmd window.
Keep trying once you will have it right i am pretty sure your router isnt bricked

I've tried all the solutions I found, including yours, and I just can't obtain a ping reply from router. I've tried a few times, but ping just goes from 'Destination host unreachable', to 'Request timed out'

EDIT: I don't unplug the router from the power source to reset, I use the on/off button in the back, is that ok?

Yes.

Note: Router's LAN ports are not dead. I found a traffic analyzer called 'Wireshark' and when I turn router on it shows a lot of activity on the network, but I still can't obtain ping reply from router.

P.S: You can see a 5 minutes video introduction to Wireshark here:

Respond Ping Request from WAN set to no in router ? that is default setting
not thinkingsorry ignore ,

Now I'm also experiencing the same problem as the OP (a week after upgrading the CFE Version). Today I put the router into rescue mode but encountered this problem: The router's PW LED is automatically blinking when I turn it on and the ASUS Firmware Restoration Utility firmware doesn't detect that the router is in rescue mode.

After googling for 4-5 hours I've tried the following solutions which all didn't work:

- 30/30/30 Hard Reset
- default method of putting the router into Rescue Mode
- holding WPS button for 30 seconds & turn on the router while holding it for another 30 second then release and wait another 30 seconds.

I'm holding on the Warranty atm hoping that someone out there has the answer!
