I have read and read about NAS and every review in my price range on this site (sub $600). The bare metal recovery discussed on the HP NAS is a feature that I would like to have. So here are my questions.

1. Can bare metal recovery software be added to a NAS that doesn't come pre-installed like the HP MediaVault?
2. If it can be added to a NAS, what are the two best programs I should consider?
3. Are there other NASes under $600 that ship with bare metal recovery software.

Thank you for any help you can provide!

1. Sure, you can add backup software to work with any NAS.

2. I don't have any specific recommendations for applications. I'm sure others will chime in.

3. I don't pay enough attention to the bundled applications to remember. Sorry.

Do the bare metal backup programs usually reside on the individual client computers or on the NAS itself?

They run on the client. The NAS really has nothing to do with it aside from being a place to store the backup images.

Thanks for the guidance! Your answers to my simple questions have really helped. I have decided to purchase a Synology DS-207+ or a QNAP TS-209 Pro. Any significant differentiation between the two?

I am looking to consistently back up three computers over the network and house large audio recording master files. And as you have gathered, having a bare metal backup is quite important to me. I have had three hard drives fail on me over the past seven years. Fortunately, I had backups of the data, but operating system and program reinstallation is no fun.

I have looked at NTI's Backup 5 and Acronis' True Image 11. Any preference from anyone out there?

Those are similar products. Synology has a stronger U.S. support and an active user Forum.

I don't want to hijack the thread, but I have a question along similar lines on backups.

I'm running FreeNAS on a newly built box, and I have SecondCopy 2000 running on my WinXP box. I have a job setup to do a "simple copy" from the WinXP box to the NAS box. Problem is, every time I run it, it copies over EVERYTHING to the NAS box, not just the files that are new/changed. :(

I used to have a server running OpenBSD with Samba and I never had any problems, so I"m confused since FreeNAS is using Samba. Anyone have any ideas?
