I was glad to find this forum. I searched the archives before I posted. I could not find any thread that matches my situation.
I have a business that offers free wifi to customers using a D-Link dir-655. On the same network I have two separate computers running CCTV. One wired computer (30fps X 16 cameras) and one wireless computer (30fps X 8 cameras). Currently I use external hard drives (usb) to separate the footage from the computers. (Thieves usually grab the computer thinking they have the footage).
I would like to add a NAS for the RAID capabilities as well as the increased speed of Gigabit Ethernet. With costumers accessing my internet I would want to keep them off of the NAS. I am more interested in the RAID 0 than redundancy. Currently the cctv system consumes 60+ GB per day.
I am looking for suggestions.
Cost is an issue but not my only consideration.
From my standpoint I am going to use the NAS as external storage for two computers and want zero access from everyone else.
Currently I remote access (via static ip) both live and recorded video footage from the individual computers, I would like to connect (from outside of the network) to the NAS directly and view footage from both CCTV computers from one drive. As the system is now it slows considerably when I view all live cameras and some archived footage simultaneously. I am hoping that some of the bogging is due to the usb hard drives.
Can a NAS run a CCTV program when the capture cards are in the computers?
I am leaning toward a d-link DNS-323. (Tigerdirect has the 321, is that comparable?). I planned on buying a BYOD regardless of the model.
I am a novice but do better than any local geeks for hire.
Sorry for the long post & thanks in advance for the suggestions.
