NAS for streaming to PS3 and Xbox360

vng0

New Around Here
Hi,

I have a Linksys NMH-300 NAS and it works fairly well but the media streaming (DVD VOB files) to my PS3 is not great. I have a Cat6 cable going from the NAS to the PS3 but I find when I FF or RR at over 30 that the NAS cannot keep up.

Is this normal for all NAS' or is there a better option?

This is the most important for me, that I can stream and pause, fast forward, rewind, etc. almost as good as if it was a real DVD.

Other features like iTunes server, storage, etc. I assume are pretty standard across these devices.

Any ideas?

Is there a switch between the two devices?

I run a gigabit network, although the PS3 is probably 10/100, and my ReadyNAS NVX does just fine streaming to my PS3 for movies.

There is a chance that they could be running at 10mbps, you may want to check - the NAS will probably show you and I think you can view it in the PS3 also (but not positive).

Best,
Roger.

From what I can gather, the NMH-300 does not have a particularly fast CPU, so read speeds may not be that fast, and this may be the reason why you are getting the problems you are

I read somewhere that it was only capable of about 10MB/s transfer speeds, but that may be incorrect

As for what else you could try instead

Most modern NAS's will allow you to stream to your PS3 with no problem

Look at companies like
Synology
Qnap
Netgear
Thecus
to name a few
