NAS that will support RAID1 and JBOD in parallel

New Around Here
I'm looking to buy my first NAS to be use as family movies and photos backup and to stream HD movie .

And after reading on RAID i cam out with the next setup , but i don't know if a NAS device can support it.

1. Two HD in RAID 1 - for family movies and photos etc.. (important stuff )
3. 2-3 HD in JBOD - for download movie from the web (can be crated a gain if needed)

i Like the NSA to show this setup as two virtual HD,
that can be accesses from SFTP and mobile devices .

You may ask your self why not use RAID 6/5 with 5 HD or more,
its because i like my system KISS (keep it simple stupid),
and be able to eject any drive from the NAS and connect directly to a PC
at any time, can i do it with RAID 1/JBOD?

one of the device that i do think on is this :
http://www.synology.com/en-global/products/compare_products/DS1513+/DS412+

Or just to buy 2 small NAS , This way i can buy as my need for space will grow?

What do you think ?

NOTE - This NAS will be use by my extended family, ~70 people .

Many NASes support multiple volumes. QNAP, Synology, Thecus and others offer this feature.

JBOD provides no data protection in case of failure.

NAS drives are formatted with Linux filesystems that can't be read by Windows or MacOS without installing special drivers.

Thank you for the replay ,
Now i know what to look for on the User's Guide .

But the section is very short and give a referral to DMS help .

Will i be able to take on of the HD from the JBOD and connect it to a PC directly ?

I think that i will buy Synology DS1513+, what do you think of the device for my needs ?

With the right drivers, yes. There are several software/driver packages that allow windows to read EXT4 file system types, which is what Synology uses.

JBOD provides no protection the individual disk, but it is safer than RAID0. Lose a RAID0 disk and then all data across the entire array is lost. Lose a JBOD disk, and then generally just what was contained on the disk is gone (unless a file spanned multiple disks).

I backup the key folders in the NAS to a USB3 drive in native NAS/Linux format (much faster than NTFS under Linux).
And I can read that USB3 drive under windows with a freeware driver I've tested.
I elected to not use RAID1 in my 2 bay, preferring two volumes, with one being the Time Backup with file versioning backups.

Thanks for the response .

WOW - I didn't know that you can do that . It's a better solution (if it can protect from user accident deletion). I will do just that .

In regard to the JBOD : let say that one of the HD will be damage can i replace it and use that data from other HD's? correct ? if so its good enough for me .

I will be back with more Q :-) after i order and receive the synology.

Any last word on the Synology DiskStation DS1513+, before i order, any suggestion on a deferent device ?

Thank you all for the guidance .

JBOD. No protection from either drive failure or file system corruption or human error (hosed up a file, deleted a folder, etc.)

That's why I use Synology's Time Backup (misnomer). It keeps the last n weeks of file versions for selected VIP folders. And that's on a separate volume which is a separate file system.
No RAID.
USB3 backup.

DS1513 Nice. As a SOHO user, I needed only 2 bay, with these big fat drives. And the no-RAID1, no-RAID5 strategy. DS212 with BYOD far less costly.
RAID5 will fail you.
