Just looking to see whats new, whats better than what i got, always wanting better performance. My latest after years of RTAC86U and then the AX

Now using the RTBE86U, no longer as good as it was, whats are people using these days.

Thanks for your input.

Need to be able to upload a nordvpn setup file, need to be able to decode encode like one of my older routers. And need to replace my existing 4 routers, so cant spend more that £400 ish each, and would need Wifi 6, or 6 and 7

Thanks, what you using?

Just ran a test on speed using the BE86U internal internet test 379.13 Mbps bypass VPN

If i go to speednet, ill be using VPN, speed is, 1st 10 Mbps, but i ignore first test, second test 173Mbps and most tests after on all 4 routers come out at 173, all routers use the latest servers for UK, and are in London.

I download the latest servers in London, from Nordvpn server list, then use 4 of the top numbers. Usally i get good results, but 173 use to be 230 6 months ago,?

All have latest Merlin firmware, yes i know one router no longer supported

Thanks

You are asking the same questions every 6 months. Your real issue is the commercial VPN. They use scare tactics to get your money and don't really provide the anonymity and security they claim. The less you know the easier target you become. I'm using my ISP and getting Gigabit speeds from $129 gateway. 🤷‍♂️

Are you using OpenVPN, based on this speed? It's old and single-threaded - slow by design. This is especially noticeable on low-power devices like routers. Use WireGuard - it reaches up to 1 Gbps on BCM4916 devices (like your RT-BE86U). NordVPN has poor WireGuard support - only through third-party config generators, but you can still try them. This is the reason I currently use ProtonVPN and previously used Surfshark - both have first-class WireGuard support with official config generators, no third-party generators required, and no proprietary wrappers on top of the protocol.

Well, there are some valid use cases, such as in countries where the government tries to dictate what you can and cannot do on the internet. VPNs also useful in many second/third-world countries where certain content may not be available due to regional restrictions. They're a nice thing to have on public Wi-Fi as well. But yeah, the security claims are nonsense.

I have NordVPN account myself and for years, but it's used for other purposes and only when needed.

A consumer router is the issue. I use Nord on a gig connection, if I use the NordLynx (i.e. wireguard) protocol, I get around 750Mbps on a desktop using the Nord client.

Running the VPN on the router (UCG Ultra) I get 250+ Mbps, using wireguard (manual config). The reality is that the routers at this range don't have the horsepower. If you want significantly more throughput, put in a small form factor PC running OpenSense.

Just my $0.02

I can't speak for the UCG Ultra specifically, but the top Asus BE devices definitely have enough horsepower for speeds around 1 Gbps:

So the issue @JohnAsus is facing must lie elsewhere - either the wrong protocol or slow servers.

only when needed
Basically the same thing, but I configured ipset-based split-tunneling on my home network and on-demand profiles on iOS, so the VPN is always active when needed without manual intervention.

I wouldn't trust on-router split tunneling. URL based may work okay, App based on device that doesn't see most of the traffic is risky, the same for Region based. NordVPN App is better on the client side.

I use the same UCG-Ultra Gateways on all networks, they are low power 6W devices, do ~150Mbps on OpenVPN and ~350Mbps on WireGuard. Nothing I use public VPN for though needs >10Mbps really.

WireGuard only, NordVPN doesn't provide configuration files, setting it up is tricky and not for everyone.

The OP had quite capable AX-class router for quite some time with WireGuard available, upgraded to BE-class with faster CPU and also WireGuard available 6 months ago... some users prefer to pay, I guess.
