New Around Here
After reading the solid reviews here, I decided to purchase the Netgear FVS336G for our office.

I am however having a really hard time setting this up.

I have setup a few dozen routers (mine, friends, family etc).
But cannot figure this one out.

The problem is that I can't even get the Router to recognize the ISP Settings. It won't acquire an IP from Verizon.

My current office setup:
ISP: Verizon DSL
I bought a dumb Westell Modem so that I could use whatever router I decided.
Current Router: My longtime trusted and loyal Linksys WRT54g (probably the 3rd one I've bought)

When I connect my Linksys Router to the modem, it works without a hitch.
But when I connect the Netgear Router to the modem, it doesn't acquire an IP Address.

It doesn't require username password. And I already cloned the mac address.
So don't know what else I'm missing

I also upgraded the firmware to the latest.

If I connect the Netgear to the Linksys, then it works, so it is able to acquire an IP address if I setup the Linksys as a gateway.

Any help is appreciated

Are you having the Westell modem complete the PPPoE connection? If so, try changing the modem to bridged mode (in advanced settings) and have the Netgear do the PPPoE for you.

dumb modem

The modem is a westell 6110.
it's a dumb modem. not even a MAC address... nothing to configure (as far as I know).

Its not as dumb as you think. Connect it directly to your PC and see if it assigns you an IP. If it does it will likely be in the 192.168.1.x range. Now, open a command prompt window by going to Start > Run then type CMD. At the command prompt type IPCONFIG. Here it should list your Default Gateway IP. Type that gateway IP into a webbrowser window and see if it logs you into the management interface. From there look for Advanced settings and change your connection type to Bridged. Save and reboot modem.

Reconnect the modem to the WAN port of your Netgear. Log into your Netgear router and set your PPPoE username/password.

here are instructions I found online that may help you.

oh, btw, have you installed the latest firmware on the Netgear router? Netgear has had several firmware revisions and yours could very possibly be old. Get the latest.

It seems you are correct about the 6110. Its an ADSL bridge. Westell uses incorrect terminology when they call it a modem on their site.

Bridged ADSL from the telco, I haven't seen that in FL for years....

Have you checked the Netgear's firmware revision?

yeah...

They sent me a newer model, but their tech team told me that it wouldn't work properly in bridge mode, and told me to buy this 6110, which is what I did.

Anyways, I updated the firmware before starting this thread.
Opened a ticket with netgear, but not really hopeful... Heard that support from these guys (or any other vendor) are non existant.. All they tell you to do is disconnect everything, wait 30 seconds and reconnect again.

More info:

On my linksys (working)

Login Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP
MTU: 1500

It's also cloning the MAC Address from the first dsl router (the one before the 6110)

So with the netgear, I also cloned the MAC address, set it to grab the IP from the ISP and set the MTU to 1500.

No dice

I'm sure you've checked all this but I'll mention it just in case...

1) Is the Netgear configured for WAN Port 1 only? On the WAN MODE tab you should set SINGLE WAN PORT and set to WAN 1.

2) On the WAN 1 ISP Settings tab, try Auto Detect. maybe you'll get lucky. if not, on this same tab set NO for ISP Login then Dynamic IP and Auto for DNS servers.

3) Click the WAN status button and see what populates. let us know. If its not getting DNS servers, try using Open DNS 208.67.222.222,
208.67.220.220

Its possible Verizon will require you to give them the MAC of the Netgear to get this going. I understand you didn't need to do this with your previous equipment, but I advise you to check with them.

If nothing seems to help, try hard resetting the router using the reset button the rear. Hold it in for 10 seconds while powered on and then release. All settings will revert to factory defaults and you'll need to setup again. its possible that some corrupted data remained from the firmware upgrade.

Good luck.
