Netgear Nighthawk R7000 Slow Wired Speed

Occasional Visitor
Hi all,

Hope someone can help, been reseaching for a couple of days now without success, I have just bought an R7000 for use in the UK, I have have BT Infinity 2 and was using the BT Home Hub 5.

I have noticed that my download speeds went from 74.86 Mbps to 67.22 Mbps and uploads from 18.57 Mbps to 17.23 Mbps going from the supplied BT Home Hub 5 to the Netgear Nighthawk R7000.

I am currently running DD-WRT 24865M and have tried the speed test with both DD-WRT and Netgear Genie with the same results.

I haven't made many changed in the DD-WRT apart from PPPoE settings with password etc... and changed the wireless settings.

Your guidance is greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't be too worried about 11 and 8 % variations.

But that DD-WRT firmware is suspect though (uses generic drivers instead of the 'official' and optimized ones).

Do you perform a reset to factory defaults after loading the firmware you want to test? Do you manually and minimally configure the router to secure it and connect to your ISP? Have you tried testing each channel and picking the best (overall) for each band?

What device are you using to test with (handheld, laptop)? How far from the router and how many obstacles in between?

The following links may give some clues on what you can try too.

I always reset the router to default when uploading a new firmeware, I did have minimal setting when testing, I am not too worried about my Wifi downloads and uploads, the variance is with a wired connection, Wifi connection are good.

Thanks for your help.

Then maybe the rest of the suggestions may help you get closer to your old speeds again. :)
