Netgear R7000. external drive and speed: ext4 better than NTFS? Beam forming on?

Based on advice I have got on the forum , I am about to buy a netgear R7000 to couple with a 3tb hd via usb 3.0
Will the file format of the HD influence transfer speed?
NTFS is slightly more convenient if accessing though windows directly, but then, I normally use Ubuntu.

Also, I stumbled upon a suggestion that disabling beam shaping might improve speed, which sounds a bit counterintuitive.
I'll be accessing my files mostly via LAN but, is disabling beam forming a good suggestion when accessing over wifi?

Thanks!

Aldo

You probably posted this in the wrong forum if you want to get a lot of answers. You might ask the admins to move it to the wireless forum.

For the external USB drive, I would recommend against using NTFS. As you noted, the only real benefit is portability but if you're already an Ubuntu user, that benefit is completely moot.

Although NTFS performance on these kinds of devices has improved significantly over the past couple of years, the number of reports of corrupted devices and data lost does not seem to be decreasing. These devices run Linux - it is my opinion that running a native Linus FS is the best course of action.

WiFi router with connected drive is always slow. NTFS far slower than native extfs. This is not a viable alternative to even a 2 bay home NAS with all its features. Most people are disappointed with drive-on-Router.

Thanks for the advice.
I see your point and I don't have massive expectations regarding performance.
Thing is, right now I don't have the spare cash for a proper NAS, but I need better wifi in any case, and the r7000 seems to be a better option speed-wise than the raspberry Pi I am using at the moment..

Thanks Tim, very thorough review!
I see you tested both NTFS and FAT32 performance.
I wonder how that stacks against an ntf4 volume, but I suspect I'll soon find out.
I have found a second hand r7000 and, fingers crossed, it should be with me, and working fine, within a few days, so I'll be able to test with what I have and reformat a few drives to check performance.
