Netgear ReadyNAS DUO, Wireless N but only 1MB/s speed?

New Around Here
Hi there,

I'm new to this forum and NAS systems in general. I just bought a Netgear ReadyNAS Duo (2x1TB) NAS to use with my desktop and netbook. The NAS is connected with the bundled CAT5 cable (not sure if this is CAT5E) to my Virgin Cable Netgear wireless modem - VMDG280. The NAS set up fine using the bundled software on both my Windows 7 Netbook and XP Desktop.

However, I'm now copying files over to the NAS but only getting 1.1 MB/s transfer speeds which seems shockingly slow for a new system. I saw the sticky thread, but presumed my system should be faster as the router is wireless N (not G).

I don't know much about this sort of stuff, but is there anything I can do to improve the copy and paste speeds? (I've googled the problem and tried disabling antivirus without much success.

Any help at all would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Owen.

Connect your laptop directly into the router and try another copy post back on the speeds you are getting then.

My first thought would be its a problem on modem/router that you have...

Thanks for your prompt response - much appreciated.

I connected it direct to the laptop on windows 7 using a static ip address and I got speeds of just over 4MB/s - which is better but still not great.

It does mean my main problem seems to be my router though - any ideas on how to improve the performance?

Cheers

Owen.

Visit the Readynas forums and in the Performance area you will find plenty of info.

Also check the Readynas FAQ. Some info is a bit dated, but still applies. Look under Performance here.

This user has some great tips on using your Readynas and improving performance.

Hopefully you work it out. I have used Duo's and can get ~15-20MB/s when used in an all Gigabit environment.

Some of my own advice. Make sure your Windows is updated with MS patches and SP1. Make sure your NIC and wireless card have the latest drivers.

Try with and without jumbo frames (enabled on both laptop and Duo). Your switch must support Jumbo Frames in order for JF to work so maybe go back to the direct connection test you tried previously.

When not using JF, try changing the Duo MTU setting to something a little lower than 1500, like 1492.
