I'm having problem with my network neighborhood.

If I have just rebooted my router then I can see my Asus router-NAS. However, after sometime, usually overnight, the Asus router-NAS is no longer there. I can see the other devices attached to the network but not the Asus router-NAS.

My Asus router-NAS is named without any spaces so I think its not the problem. Also, I can see it in my network if I'd reboot the router. I can also access my Asus router-NAS using ftp. Transmission detects it as well. I can also see it as media share. But not as a NAS.

Hi,

No suggestions nor inputs whatsoever? Please help. This situation really gets in the way of enjoying my router.

After rebooting my AC66u router I'd be able to see my router in Network, Computer section. But after some time, it will disappear. Although, I'd still see the router as Media Device and Network Infrastructure I can no longer access my shared folders.

Please help...

Hi,
Is your NAS on fixed IP address?

Check the router System Log for more details.

Hi Merlin,

Thank you for replying. I've posted my syslog here. Honestly, I couldn't understand much about what it says. Hope you'll finding something useful that could point me to the right direction. Again, thank you so much.

Not sure if this is relevant or not, but these log lines seem to indicate you're running out of space, maybe on the /tmp filesystem? (which is where /var points to)
Code:
Jul 27 21:56:49 nmbd[1403]: ERROR: can't write to file /var/run/samba/nmbd.pid: No space left on device
Jul 27 21:56:49 smbd[1408]: ERROR: can't write to file /var/run/samba/smbd.pid: No space left on device

What does the output of df -h show when you're having the issue? du -hx /tmp might help us narrow down what is consuming space.

Hi VinceV,

I ran du -hx /tmp and I've attached the output here. Here's the output for the df -h

Code:
Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 25.4M 25.4M 0 100% /
tmpfs 117.0M 30.3M 86.7M 26% /tmp
devfs 117.0M 0 117.0M 0% /dev
/dev/mtdblock5 32.0M 1.0M 31.0M 3% /jffs
/dev/sdb1 13.1G 9.3M 12.4G 0% /tmp/mnt/cdrking
/dev/sda1 930.9G 573.6G 357.3G 62% /tmp/mnt/Backup

Hope it would help. Thanks. :)

Okay, from that output, it doesn't look like the device is full. Did you run that while it was working, or after it stopped appearing in your network neighborhood? We want to see what it looks like when it's broken...

Unfortunately, I ran it when it was working. When it stops working again, I'll run those commands again and post it here.

I don't know if this would help, but, I have Windows 8, 7 and Ubuntu systems and all of it can't access the Asus shares. So I guess that eliminates the possibility that the problem is client/ windows related...

Hi VinceV,

Here's the output for the df -h:

Code:
Filesystem Size Used Available Use% Mounted on
/dev/root 25.4M 25.4M 0 100% /
tmpfs 117.0M 117.0M 0 100% /tmp
devfs 117.0M 0 117.0M 0% /dev
/dev/mtdblock5 32.0M 1.0M 31.0M 3% /jffs

/dev/sda1 930.9G 573.6G 357.3G 62% /tmp/mnt/Backup

Will a router reset and manually entering all my previous inputs such as SSID, WPA, Users and Passwords be helpful? I'll try it out later.. I'm really becoming frustrated.

Okay, we can now see that your tmpfs is indeed filling up...

The du output shows us that the /tmp/var/cache/minidlna directory is the culprit.

I think a good solution would be to move the minidlna database/cache to an external disk.

For example, if you wanted to move it to /mnt/Backup/minidlna, you could create a /jffs/configs/minidlna.conf.add with this:

db_dir=/mnt/Backup/minidlna

I haven't tested this configuration, but I think it should work...

This is assuming that you actually use the DLNA server on the router. If not, you can probably solve your problem by simply disabling it all together.

Hi VinceV,

Your suggestion seem to have worked. Although, I also made a factory reset and manually entered all my settings again. But anyways, thank you so much... :D

Tony, I'm glad I could help... Out of curiosity, how large is the minidlna directory now that it's on the external disk?

vince,

/tmp/var/run/minidlna is just a mere 4.0K :D really thank you so much...

No problem... Looks like it's working. What I was actually after was the size of the database on your other disk, wherever you ended up putting it. I wanted to see how big it got if it didn't run out of room...

oops! I haven't fully understood that. I ran a check on my new dlna directory and its about, 161mb now. Looks like it really needed a larger space. :)

RMerlin, do you think it would be worthwhile to add a GUI option for changing where minidlna stores its database? It seems like anybody with a reasonably large media collection would run into the same issue as Tony and fill their tmpfs up...

I wouldn't mind getting my hands dirty with some coding if you think it would be worth while...

This would be a really nice option to have. I suffered the same problem some time ago with my media collection, but realised the problem at the time and also moved the database location.
