New N66U can't access the UI on cable

I bought a N66U from Amazon in UK to see how the wifi is compared with the AC66U.
Set it up and attached my laptop with a wired connection on one of the Lan ports, I could not connect to 192.158.1.1 so I put the unit in Rescue mode and tried to upgrade to the latest Asus firmware , the same thing happened when I tries to connect to the router.
Then I tried Merlins firmware with the same result and then finally I installed the TomatoUSB-Shibby latest firmware and could connect on the wireless 5 GHz band to it and set it up this way.
Has anyone else had this problem with a new router ?

Hi,
Is that 158 in the address a typo for 168? Did you clear the browser cache? Did you try to ping the LAN port with Windows command?
And then tried TFTP for f/w update? Can you access thru WiFi?

Yes , it is a typo 192.168.1.1 is the correct.
No , I did not clear the browser cache or ping the LAN port with Windows command. As I mentioned I could use the rescue mode and the firmware restore utility to upload the new f/w:s to the router. But after updating the f/w I could not connect to the UI . When I had updated to TomatoUSB I got connected thru WiFi and setup the router. I could not even log in to the router with the f/w that was installed initially on it.
