thats why an AP with a fast CPU can handle jumbo frames. The bridging and conversion is done by CPU. not all switch chips support jumbo frames and the ones that do have different supported sizes.

This is exactly my reason for suggesting the RB9xx APs because the traffic is handled by the CPU. If a wifi interface appears on the interface list in routerOS that is handled by the CPU than it can fragment large packets without issue. From what i know is that jumbo frames on routerOS involves changing the MTU so it doesnt mean that every packet is 9K in size, just the maximum size of packets.

The performance hit comes if the entire contents of the packet have the be read such as in store and forward.

but you will get a performance hit for wifi regardless if the amount of data being sent is more than it can handle

Ofcourse you could just adjust the frame size of the AP's ethernet and the performance hit would be gone. We'll let the OP try out the config first and than see the results. I use jumbo frames on my network and i am actually able to utilise up to 80% of wifi capacity.

On my network each device has a different size packets. My mikrotik switch uses packet sizes above 9K, my CCR at 10K, my ISP, the usual 1.5K and wifi is left on default (using asus wifi routers with merlin firmware) but i did enable jumbo frames and CTF forwarding. Throughput wise i dont see a performance hit on wifi.

Ofcourse if you want i can test this for you when i get back in september.

Also some of my CCR's interfaces are set to 65K

@sfx2000: How can I reliably interpet a device log without an exact time stamp? The clock will easily drift minutes after a few months.

@System Error Message: UPS just delivered the package today. Just unboxed and setup a testbench. The fan noise is horrible. It idles and every about 10 seconds accelerates for 1-1,5 seconds. :S Will get back as soon as I've acquainted myself with RouterOS.

There have been people who've modified the cooling on the RB1100AHx2 and CCRs. The problem is that they follow mikrotik's old style of cooling hence the reliable but noisy fans. I bought quiter fans for my CCR before but one of them failed so i just put the stock ones back on. When you have 2x1U deep fans running next to each other in a 1U metal chassis they make a lot of noise.

There was one post on mikrotik forum of someone using a big heatsink in keeping it cool and modding it too. See if you can change the fan profiles in the system -> health section.
