Tried using older browser IE, FF or safari and all have the same issue

But you can log in ok? EDIT: sorry! Just re-read the title! You've tried the default username and password? (admin/admin http://m.setuprouter.com/router/asus/rt-ac87u/login.htm). Restore to factory default settings and try the default username and password.

I'd try flashing to the latest Asus stock firmware for that model, restore to factory default afterwards, then reflash with 378.56 again and restore to factory default afterwards and see if that solves it.

I was trying not to restore back to default. But i had to and got it working.
Hit another issue, as i was changing my LAN IP. It would nuke my freshly setup password.

So found a method to get out of this loop

Setup wireless encryption first. IGNORE ADMIN CREDENTIALS
Login to your encrypted network :)
Click on reboot from the admin page
* router reboots *
load the admin page and change the LAN IP, allow the DHCP changes etc
* router reboots *
and login with the new credentials :)

I think we all feel like that - and generally waste a lot of time trying to avoid the restore to factory default settings (RFDS) only to have to do it in the end - 2 days later. (And then kick ourselves when we find it solved the problem.) I now see the RFDS as an opportunity to re-familiarise myself with all the various tabs and settings and to wonder why I've said "yes" to some of them.

Glad you overcame the other snag; I hope you wrote it down so that in 3 or 4 months' time, when you've forgotten you ever encountered the snag, you won't have to "reinvent the wheel".
